Delays containers Rotterdam – end is not yet in sight, carriers consider measures
By: Sjoerd Drost, Manager Sea Freight Import HST Group
The problems about the seafreight containers in Rotterdam (read more here) are far from settled. In fact, the waiting times are recorded and in the meantime there is stil nothing noticeable about a solution. Despite announcements of ECT to recruit new employees to go for this summer, the old fashioned, capacity in the peaks. Drivers who arranged the visiting, reporting that half of the faucets are not occupied. This exposes the wait times on to sometimes 4-6 hours for set up or dropping off a container. These reports are reaching us now daily.
An additional problem is that now many terminals work with time appointments. You can only visit the terminal if a carrier requested an advanced and approved time window. However, these time windows are so fully booked in the peaks that you can only load as a carrier on impossible times. Or the time windows are fully booked for the next few days. The risk is that containers will come in the storage/demurrage and customers will receive the account for it.
Carriers have taken so far the cost for its own account, but they will reflect now on measures. They want to charge the waiting costs to the clients because the cost are no longer portable. Carriers also call on to customers to make notifications at bodies such as the AZV and FENEX to an even stronger signal.
With the upcoming summer vacation and the shortage of staff at the terminals, but also drivers, logistics Netherlands will face a huge challenge. And this will definitely be noticeable further in the chain!
