Speed dates

At HST Group, we have around forty vacancies. But it's not just HST Group that is facing a shortage of personnel; the entire industry is desperate for new people. It's a tough challenge. We hope that speed dates will provide the solution.

Once every two or three weeks, HST organizes a special speed date. People can then walk into the Enschede-based transport company on a Saturday morning to learn about logistics. Last weekend, RTV Oost also visited, because of a report on the staff shortage in the logistics sector.

"Sometimes people don't show up until 11 a.m.," says Leo Brant, HR manager at HST Group, with a smile. "But sometimes they arrive at 8:30 a.m. and you have 20 people in one morning. That's busy, but it's also a lot of fun. We've noticed that people really enjoy the conversations."

Transporting materials

Companies want to transport large quantities of materials from A to B, but transport companies are at their wits' end due to staff shortages. Where can they find all the staff they need? "If we were the only ones with this problem, I would be very concerned. The entire sector is facing this problem. So we hope that this will make us more accessible to people who are considering working in logistics."

Retraining

Jitse de Boer is one of the candidates who came to the company for a speed date, even though he actually works in a completely different industry. "I used to be a car salesman, but I couldn't quite find my niche in that profession." That's why he's now aiming for a driver position.

Brant explains that a background in logistics is not necessary. "We also try to fill the vacant positions with people who are not currently in the transport industry. If we find them suitable, we can train them via a mapped-out route."

Taking the plunge

On the advice of a friend, Jitse decided to take the plunge and get to know the trucking world better. "I want to be more active and see more of the world. That's why I think transport is a good fit."

"The interview went well, that's all I can say. But I have high hopes," says Jitse with a smile after his speed date.
