What is goods handling and temporary storage?

Goods handling and temporary storage means receiving goods, storing them for a limited period and then forwarding them to their next destination. Storage involves keeping goods at a location for a certain period of time. Handling or transshipment involves transferring goods from one mode of transport to another, for example from sea or air freight to road transport.

This differs from warehousing, where goods are generally stored for longer periods and services such as inventory management and order picking play a more important role. With cross-docking, goods are transferred and forwarded almost immediately, without intermediate storage.

Goods handling and temporary storage at HST: how it works

At HST, we combine storage, handling and transport. This gives you one logistics partner for receiving, storing and forwarding your goods.

  1. Register your shipment
You register the goods with us, allowing us to reserve the required space and capacity.
  2. Unload the container or trailer
We unload containers and trailers ourselves at our facilities, so there is no need to involve an additional service provider.
  3. Register the goods
After arrival, we register the goods so it is clear what has been received and where it is stored.
  4. Palletise and label
Where necessary, we place goods on pallets and apply wrapping and labels, preparing them for storage or onward transportation.
  5. Temporary storage
Your goods remain in our storage facilities for as long as necessary.
  6. Release and onward transportation
As soon as the goods are ready to continue their journey, we arrange their release and can transport them to their next destination using our own transport network.

Which goods can HST handle and store?

HST provides handling and temporary storage for various types of goods, including pallets, parcels, general cargo and full container loads. Hazardous materials can also be stored under the applicable conditions in our PGS 15 warehouse and dedicated storage bunkers. Onward transportation can be carried out in accordance with ADR regulations.

HST also offers facilities for gas measurements and container degassing. This enables goods from different logistics flows to be safely received, stored and transported onwards.

Short-term or longer-term storage

Goods do not always need to remain in a warehouse for a long period. Temporary storage can be used as a flexible buffer, for example for a few days or weeks, during seasonal peaks or when there is temporarily insufficient space in your own warehouse.

If goods need to remain at HST for longer, temporary storage can transition into warehousing. We can then also take care of inventory management, while HST Online gives you 24/7 insight into your stock.

Onward transportation with our own transport network

After temporary storage, HST can transport the goods directly to their next destination. Depending on the shipment, this can be arranged as groupage or LTL transport, or as a full truckload (FTL).

Within the Benelux, goods can be delivered within 24 to 48 hours. HST also operates scheduled services to the DACH region and Scandinavia. Road transport can also connect directly with sea and air freight, keeping storage, handling and transportation with one logistics partner.
